WORSHIPFUL BROTHER JOHN OSBY CARTRETTE, P.D.D.G.M.
John Osby Cartrette (96), son of John Asbury and Malonia Baker Cartrette, became a Master Mason on June 5, 1915. He was married to Gertrude Norris Cartrette for more than 50 years and then to Edna Lupo Ricker Cartrette. A member of First United Methodist Church for rnore than 50 years, he served 15 years as its Treasurer. He was a charter member of the Hut Bible Class which organized in 1919. He owned and operated an insurance business for more than 45 years. And was a member of the Federal Land Bank of Mullins for 34 years. His many accomplishments include: Worshipful Master of Conway Lodge No. 65 AFM (1923) where he was secretary for 19 years, Grand Convention of High Priet of SC (1927). Illustrious Master of Kingston Council No. 36, Royal and Select Masters, Conway SC (1929), Appointed Representative of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Colorado (1933), High Priest of Horry Chapter No. 48, Royal Arch Masons (1930, 31, 32, 36, 39, 40, 41. 42 & 1943), District Deputy Grand Master of the 25th Masonic Distric (1940-1941), Member of The Imperial Council of the Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America in Omar Temple of Charleston SC (1944), Grand Master of the Most Illustrious Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of South Carolina (1950-1951), Eminent Commander of Florence Commandery No 10 Knights Templar (1954), Life Member of Horry Lodge No. 381 AFM (1955), Member of Knights of the York Cross or Honor Palmetto Priory No. 54 (1957), Knight Mason member of Womack - Secrest Class at Spartanburg SC (1974), Eminent Commander of Myrtle Beach Commendery No. 22 Knights Templar (1976), Member of the Correspondence Circle of Quatour Coronati Lodge No 2076 London England, Member of Missouri Lodge of Research. Past Senior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina,
Charter member of Horry Lodge No. 381 AFM where he served as secretary (1951-1956),
Chaplain (1957 - 1974) and Historian: (1973 - 1989).
He was known by all as “Mr. Mason” of South Carolina.
